Amanda Wheatley, a young woman wearing a black shirt and a red vest with a traditional Tsimshian eagle design and shell buttons, stands with the Pacific ocean and mountains in the background.

Prince Rupert, BC – We’re excited to announce Amanda Wheatley as the winner of our 2026 CMTN Orange Shirt design contest with her artwork titled Growing Together. Amanda is a self-taught Tsimshian artist from the Gitga’at First Nation (Hartley Bay) and was born and raised in Prince Rupert.

Amanda says, “Alu Hahaytk di waayu. The traditional name I currently hold is Alu Hahaytk, meaning Standing Alone. Laxsgyiik dii pdeegu. I am an Eagle from the House of Sinaxeet. I was drawn to art through my late grandfather, who loved to paint, as well as by my late uncle, who was known for his traditional copper shields. As a self-taught artist, I have learned and developed my techniques through books, mentors, and personal experience. Through my art, I continue to learn, grow, and connect with my Tsimshian heritage.

In my design the tree symbolizes growth, life, connection, and remembrance, while the many handprints represent children and the lasting impact of their lives. The handprint at the bottom serves as a reminder that every child deserves to be seen, remembered, valued, and protected.”

Amanda’s design will be featured on our CMTN Orange Shirt Day shirts for the next several years. Congratulations, Amanda!
